Nokia 3650, BlueTooth, Windows XP

The first thing I did was order a blue tooth dongle. For the Nokia 3650 you need a BlueTooth 1.1 compliant connection. I went to ebay and found a PenBlue 30 M bluetooth dongle for about $20 with shipping. It came with a mini-cd that had the drivers. This is actually manufactured by Mavin Technology. Here is link to their site.

For the dongle I bought, I found that there was a newer widcomm available on the Mavintec web site bundled with the drivers. Next, I installed the PC Suite from Nokia that came on a CD with the phone. If you don't have the CD handy, you can download it from Nokia http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/software/3650/
And here is the Nokia documentation on how to set up the bluetooth connection.

PC Suite Guide

If you can not open this file, you will need to download Adobe Reader which is free from Adobe.

Get adobe reader now

After installing the PC suite you will have an icon on the task bar by the clock for mRouter. Right click on this and choose settings. I set up the m-router to connect on COM4. This screenshot was taken after I had the connection established, so yours may say Not Connected at this point.

In windows XP, I right clicked on the little blue tooth icon (third one from the left of the clock) and say "Explore my bluetooth places".

Then select view devices in range.

After a few seconds it should show a phone icon. This screenshot was taken after I paired the device, which is what the checkmark represents. Next I'll describe how to pair it.

I right click on the phone and select "Pair Device".

It will ask you for a code, I entered 2112.

Then a message poped up on the 3650 asking me to enter the key, I entered 2112 on the 3650. You can use any key, just make sure you enter the same key in both places. A checkbox should appear over the 3650 icon as shown earlier.

Now we need to esablish a serial connection. Then I right click on the phone icon again and choose connect serial port.

Again the 3650 asks me if I want to accept the serial connection from Lexx (the name of my PC), I say yes. XP says that the connection fails but a few seconds I get the tada sound from XP and the m-router icon on the taskbar shows a connection.

I had several problems with XP dropping the connection if another person was logged in to XP, and after I logged that profile out I usually had to reboot to get the bluetooth connection to work. The usb dongle is powerful, but the 3650 bluetooth connection is not. I had to find a location on my computer desk where I could get good signal strength. You can check this by going to the bluetooth icon on the taskbar, selecting "Browse my bluetooth places", select "View my bluetooth services", then right click on blue tooth serial port and selecting properties. At the bottom there is a horizontal bar that shows signal strength. Try to get the bar in the middle or higher by positioning the phone in different places. Closest to the computer may not be the best spot, I found that about 5 feet away worked good.

Now that you have a bluetooth connection established start up the Nokia PC Suite. Use it to browse the information on your phone and install applications. To install ChemLabPartner.jar, select Tools->install applications. From there browse to where ChemLabPartner.jar was downloaded and select it. You will get a transfer window popup that shows the progress of the transfer. Once the transfer is complete, the 3650 will ask if you want to install ChemLabPartner. Select yes and then select the location you want to install it (either the phone's interal memory or in the memory card if there is one present).
